Motor Vehicle Registrations
What you need to bring with you for:
Vehicle Renewals:
- A current State of Maine Insurance Card
- The expiring registration
- The current mileage
New Registration, Maine Dealer Sale:
- The Title Application (blue)
- Factory Window Sticker, if Brand New Vehicle
- Current Insurance Card for New Vehicle
- Current Mileage
New Registration, Private/Casual Sale:
- A Bill of Sale
- Previous owners Title (if 1995 or newer), signed over to the new owner
- Current Insurance Card on Vehicle being registered
- Current Mileage
Transfers, Maine Dealer Sale:
- Registration (yellow) of the vehicle you are transferring from.
- The Title Application (blue)
- Factory Window Sticker, if brand new
- Current mileage
- Current State of Maine Insurance Card for Vehicle being registered
Transfers, Private/Casual Sale:
- Registration (yellow) of the vehicle you are transferring from.
- A Bill of Sale

- You will need your out of state registration
- You will need your out of state Title or loan documents showing what financial institution holds the title

We cannot photocopy registrations. Duplicate registrations are available for $6 if yours is lost.
Please let us know before starting your registration if you are required to file an SR-22.
*Please note new registrations must be completed in the Town Office, no new registrations will be processed 15 minutes prior to closing.

Maine is Replacing its General Issue Chickadee Plate in 2025
Beginning May 1, 2025, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) and Agents will no longer issue license plates with the chickadee design. Anyone who currently has plates with the chickadee design will be required to obtain new plates when they renew their registration or obtain a new registration on or after May 1, 2025.
For new registrations and renewals in the Passenger Class (PC) class code, registrants can choose for no additional costs:
- a Pine Tree Plate (existing PC class code) or;
- a “no tree plate” or;
- one of the current specialty plates (normal fees apply).
Plate Reservations:
Beginning June 3, 2024, registrants who would like to keep their current chickadee plate numbers may reserve their plate number for a $25 one-time fee.

When will I receive my new plates?

If you are a Rapid Renewal customer, you will receive your plates and registration in the mail after having completed the renewal process. This affects all registrations that have an expiration of May 31, 2025 and later.

If your town doesn't participate in Rapid Renewal, and you reserve your existing plate number, you will be sent your plates one month prior to your expiration date.
What if my town doesn't participate in Rapid Renewal?
You will have the option to reserve your existing plate using a Standalone Reservation Process.
What if I move or my address changes after my reservation is made?
If your address changes after your reservation is submitted you may use the Standalone Reservation Portal to update your shipping address.
What if I want to cancel my reservation?
You will need to contact the BMV at PlateReserve.BMV@maine.gov.
Do I need to reserve my new plate?
If you have a chickadee plate, you'll have the option to reserve your current plate number or receive a new plate number.
How much does it cost to reserve my current plate number?
If you wish to keep your existing plate number, there will be a one-time issuance fee of $25.
What if I don't want the new pine tree plate design?

If you have a PC class code you'll have the option to request a "No Tree" plate.

If you have a Chickadee plate with a class code other than PC, you may visit a town office and transition to a specialty plate design. Additional annual fee applies.
